Placement leads to career start for Ryan

With a change in thoughts about the career path to follow, Ryan White is showing great success as he works to take up construction management with Lovell Homes.

Currently a trainee site manager on placement at the housebuilder’s Willow Grange development at Lakeside, Doncaster, Ryan graduated with a 2:1 in Media Studies from Northumbria University. Having achieved that qualification, he decided that construction offered a great direction in which to forge a career. He enrolled on a course with Leeds College of Building, working on Level 5 Construction Management while learning practical skills on placement with Lovell Homes.

Colleagues and mentors there have helped his understanding of site surveying procedures and energy utilisation and efficiency and with another year of studying left, Ryan is determined to gain more knowledge on and offsite, get a good exam grade and begin to climb a career ladder within an operations team.

Of his time with Lovell Homes, he said: “I am very grateful for all the experience I gain here. There are so many opportunities to learn new skills, and master your role, I enjoy all the day-to-day tasks that come with it too. I’d recommend anyone with an interest in construction to consider a placement. It’s a brilliant experience and you get to learn practically and academically at the same time.”

His assessor at Leeds College of Building, Jacob Ware, commented: “Ryan has certainly been enthusiastic about his craft, he is always keen to take on extra work and learn more. He is a pleasure to teach and definitely a model student.”

Stephen Hill, regional operations director at Lovell Homes, said: “It is incredibly important to Lovell Homes to invest in developing raw talent, we understand the value having a team of diverse, talented people. We really love being able to give young people to opportunity to flourish in the trade.

“Ryan has shown himself to be a wonderful addition to the team. We look forward to hearing about all success in the future.”
