As National Apprenticeship Week begins, Story Homes is celebrating its growing apprenticeship programme and long-term commitment to investing in skills, junior talent and the future of the construction and housebuilding industries.
Mae Huscroft, architectural design and build apprentice, and Oliver Robinson, commercial apprentice, are dedicated young trainees in the company’s North East region.
Huscroft’s journey into the business is a strong example of Story Homes’ approach to nurturing talent. Acting on her own initiative, she approached the company to request a two-week work experience placement. During that short period, she made such a positive impression that she was subsequently offered an apprenticeship with the business.
She commented: “I approached Story Homes to ask for work experience because I really wanted to learn more about the industry. I didn’t expect it to lead to an apprenticeship, but everyone was so supportive and encouraging. I’ve been given real responsibility, the opportunity to work towards a formal qualification, and the chance to learn from the experience of knowledgeable colleagues, which has been amazing for my confidence and development.”
Robinson is completing his commercial apprenticeship the North-East team, adding: “The apprenticeship has given me a great balance of learning and practical experience. I’m developing skills that I know will stay with me throughout my career, learning from experienced colleagues, and working towards a recognised qualification, while also feeling like a valued part of the business.”
Alongside its two dedicated apprentices, Story Homes is currently supporting a further 12 colleagues who are completing apprenticeships while continuing in their day-to-day roles. These programmes span a range of disciplines including accounting, construction site supervision, chartered surveying, civil engineering and public relations. In addition, the business has 11 trainee roles currently in place, underlining its commitment to investing in future talent and helping to address the skills gap within the construction sector.
Paul Eilles, head of HR at Story Homes, said: “Apprenticeships play a vital role in developing the next generation of talent and ensuring our industry has the skills it needs for the future. At Story Homes, we are committed to giving people the opportunity to grow with our business, whether they are starting out in their careers, changing careers, or developing new expertise to support progression in their career pathway. We are proud of the progress we’ve made and are committed to growing our apprenticeship programme over the next 12 months and beyond, working in partnership with local colleges and training providers.”
Peter Brockman, North-East local council officer and apprentice programme co-ordinator, added: “The Council’s Apprenticeship Strategy and programme are an integral part of our approach to address current and future skills needs. Apprenticeships help us to attract and retain the very best talent and to benefit from a skilled, motivated and flexible workforce. It’s encouraging to see employers like Story Homes investing in skills development and playing an active role in shaping the future workforce.”
