To mark Women in Construction Week, Show House spoke to some of the women who make up Story Homes’ team to find out more about their experiences of working in the housebuilding industry.
What drew you to a career in the construction industry?
Lauren Bates – Senior Safety, Health & Environment Manager: “I grew up with two older brothers who worked in construction, and my dad did as well, so it was always a big part of our family conversations. My dad would talk about projects he’d worked on in the past, which really sparked my interest. Growing up with two older brothers also gave me the confidence to get involved and push myself – if they were doing something, I wanted to be part of it and go one better. I’d say it was a mix of competitiveness and curiosity that drew me into the industry.”
Have you faced any challenges working in a typically male-dominated industry?
“Like any industry, there can be challenges at times, but I’ve generally found it’s about holding your own and being confident enough to address things in the right way. Having a good mentor also makes a big difference and helps guide you through those situations. I think working in a management role in construction requires a balance of confidence and compassion, as the job can throw a lot of curveballs, but that comes down to the individual rather than gender.”
Have you noticed a change in attitude towards women in the construction industry?
Samantha Johnson – Site Agent:“Yes, definitely. There’s been a noticeable shift in attitudes, particularly on site. There’s far more awareness around equality and inclusion, and women are increasingly seen in roles that were once considered ‘unusual’. While there’s still work to do, the industry is moving in the right direction.”
What would you say to women who are considering entering the industry?
“Go for it. Construction offers so many different career paths, and you don’t need to fit a stereotype to succeed. If you’re willing to learn, ask questions and back yourself, there are huge opportunities available. It’s a challenging industry, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of a career in construction?
Sarah Lupton – Sales Manager: “For me, it’s being part of a process that helps people find their dream home. Construction is about more than bricks and mortar – it’s about creating spaces where people can live, grow, and thrive. Seeing a development come together and knowing you’ve played a role in someone’s home-buying journey is incredibly satisfying.”
How has Story Homes supported your career?
“Story Homes has been really supportive of my development, providing opportunities to grow, take on new challenges, and progress in my career – for example, moving from a Sales Executive to a management role. There’s a genuine commitment to recognising talent and supporting individuals, which makes it a great place to work.”
