As we recognise both Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day on Friday 8 March, Showhouse spoke to Marie-Julie Gheysens, managing director UK of international development company, Ghelamco to discuss her career so far in a male-dominated industry and the upcoming launch of her first UK project, The Arc.
The Arc in Shoreditch will be the Belgian firm’s flagship development, a fully electric scheme offering 100 homes combined with a range of well-being amenities, 150,000 sq. ft of office space, and is set to be the UK’s first DGNB-certified sustainable building
Tell us about, as a woman, how your journey in developing The Arc has been.
“The journey of developing The Arc has been nothing short of exhilarating. As a woman in the real estate development sector, I\’ve encountered challenges that have only fuelled my determination. Breaking through the norms has been empowering, and I\’ve found strength in proving that gender is no barrier to success. The support from my team and the broader community has been invaluable, reinforcing the belief that diversity in leadership is not just a concept but a powerful reality.”
“Witnessing The Arc evolve from a concept to a tangible reality has been an incredible journey. The challenges were met with resilience, and the milestones celebrated with the entire team. It\’s a testament to the power of collective vision and hard work. Seeing the community embrace and interact with the space reinforces the belief that thoughtful development can enhance lives. The experience has been humbling, and it motivates me to continue pushing boundaries in the world of real estate development.”
Who has inspired you in your career?
“I draw inspiration from a myriad of women who have shattered ceilings in various industries, but someone who particularly resonates with me is Zaha Hadid. Her groundbreaking work in architecture defied conventions, and her legacy continues to push boundaries. Her fearlessness and innovative spirit serve as a constant reminder that creativity knows no gender and true success lies in embracing one\’s unique perspective.”
What was your vision for the Arc?
“The vision for The Arc was to create more than just a building; it was about crafting an experience that harmonises with the city and Shoreditch and sets new standards for modern living. I envisioned a space that marries functionality with aesthetics, where sustainability is not an afterthought but an integral part of the design. The Arc is a testament to my commitment to innovation and a forward-thinking approach to urban development that truly encompasses sustainability, health and well-being.”
Has the industry changed in terms of inclusion and equality in recent years? What can be done to move the sector forward from here?
“While there has been progress on inclusion within our industry, there is some work to do still. To bring more women into this space, it\’s essential to address several aspects. Firstly, there needs to be a shift in the narrative surrounding women in leadership roles within real estate. Breaking down preconceived notions and fostering an environment that values diverse perspectives is crucial. Mentorship programs and networking opportunities specifically tailored for women can provide the necessary support and guidance.”
“Moreover, there should be concerted efforts to encourage young girls to explore STEM fields from an early age. By promoting education and skills development in these areas, we can cultivate a pipeline of talented women who are equipped to excel in real estate development and related industries.”
“What excites me about these prospects is the transformative impact that a more inclusive real estate industry can have on urban development. Diversity in thought and approach leads to innovative solutions and designs that resonate with a broader audience. As more women enter the field, we can expect a shift towards more sustainable, community-centric projects that cater to the diverse needs of modern society.”

What advice would you give to other ambitious women in business or young women looking to enter the industry?
“To my fellow ambitious women in business, I say this: Embrace your ambition unapologetically. Don\’t be confined by stereotypes or societal expectations. Surround yourself with a strong support system, seek mentorship, and continuously invest in your skills. Your unique perspective is your greatest asset; let it shine. And remember, success is not about conforming but about breaking moulds and forging your path.”
The Arc will be officially opened on Wednesday 6 March with the first residents due to open in the very near future.
