London Square has been given the green light for a prime development, Ransome’s Wharf, close to the Thames in Battersea and directly opposite the Chelsea Embankment.
Following the acquisition of the 1.6-acre site earlier this year, London Square submitted an application to amend the original 2015 permission to ensure compliance with updated fire safety regulations and upgrade the energy strategy to meet current standards.
The permission is the latest step in ensuring the delivery of new homes on a site which has been vacant for a decade. The development will feature five blocks of low rise apartments set in landscaped gardens along the waterfront, with 118 homes, 94 apartments for private sale and 24 affordable homes, with more than 19,000 sq ft of commercial space.
Adam Lawrence, chief executive officer of London Square, said: “Ransome’s Wharf is a great example of our ability to turn around a brownfield housing site which has been stuck for many years. Just five months post acquisition, we have a stunning and compliant scheme which is proceedable.”
“Our development will bring new focus to this stretch of the Thames, creating a highly attractive destination in one of London’s most desirable areas. We look forward to getting on site as soon as we have achieved Building Safety Regulator approval later this year.”
The new development will complete the regeneration of the area next to the Thames between Albert Bridge and Battersea Bridge. Neighbouring the Ransome’s Wharf development, fashion house Vivienne Westwood is planning to extend and update its atelier and headquarters with an application to create a new building with a collage effect façade, currently being considered by the London Borough of Wandsworth.
Battersea Park is within 200 metres of Ransome’s Wharf, with 200 acres of green open space, landscaped gardens, a children’s zoo, tennis courts and other sports. The iconic Battersea Power Station is a short walk away, with its global retail brands and leisure facilities. The site will offer strong transport links, with four stations within walking distance and quick access to the Uber Thames Clipper riverboat services.
Ransome’s Wharf will be London Square’s fourth scheme in the London Borough of Wandsworth, alongside Nine Elms, Wandsworth Common and Upper Richmond Road. It forms part of the business’ significant pipeline of homes for the capital, which stands at approximately 7,000 homes over the next five years, with 38% affordable housing.
