Jordan Brompton is the co-founder and CMO of myenergi, a company at the forefront of green technology. myenergi manufactures a wide range of eco-smart home energy technologies, including EV chargers, power storage systems and solar diverters, all designed to save money, reduce reliance on the grid and deliver total energy independence. Working closely with the new build housing sector, myenergi helps housebuilders and property developers deliver energy-efficient homes that not only comply with evolving regulations, but also boast far lower operational energy bills. In this interview, Jordan shares her journey, the challenges she’s faced along the way, and her advice for others looking towards a career in the sustainability sector.
Q: Can you share a little about your background and how you founded myenergi?
I’ve been working in the renewables industry for a number of years now, and I absolutely love it. My journey into the sector started more than a decade ago when I worked for my business partner, Lee Sutton, in a sales admin role at his previous company. I fell in love with the industry, the technology, the people and the innovation.
We went our separate ways for a while, and I set up my own business in cycling distribution, but I always kept an eye on the renewables sector – I just loved it too much to walk away entirely. Then, in 2016, when Lee was looking to kick-start a new venture, he suggested we join forces. He knew I’d brought in some of his biggest accounts before and trusted that I could market the new products he was working on in a unique way. We put our heads together over a bottle of wine, and that’s how myenergi was born.
Q: What inspired you to start myenergi?
I’ve always been passionate about sustainability, and I wanted to be part of a movement that creates real change while doing my bit to preserve the planet and ensure a bright future for our children. The energy sector is undergoing a massive transformation, and I saw a gap in the market for products that could help homeowners maximise the benefits of self-generated renewables. For me, empowering people to make a positive environmental impact, even on a small scale, was a key driver.
Lee and I couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a way for EV drivers to charge their cars via solar panels. So, together, we decided to create our own pioneering product – zappi, which became the world’s first solar-compatible EV charging device. Much like every subsequent product, zappi allows users to take control of their energy use, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and even save money.
Q: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a founder and how did you overcome it?
The journey with myenergi has been filled with excitement, but it hasn’t come without its challenges. Being an entrepreneur and pursuing what you’re passionate about can be incredibly tough. It’s competitive, demanding, and sometimes it feels like everything is working against you.
We’ve faced our share of hurdles, from the challenges of Brexit and dealing with component shortages to the continued impact of the pandemic – all within our first eight years. On top of that, I also had to navigate the premature birth of my daughter and other personal challenges. But despite the ups and downs, we’ve taken risks, learned from our setbacks, and pushed through. In the end, our perseverance and drive to succeed have made us stronger.
Q: How do you think the renewable energy sector is evolving, especially in relation to housebuilding?
The renewable energy sector is at a tipping point, especially in the housebuilding industry. We’re seeing more regulations pushing for energy efficiency, such as the UK’s Part L building regulations, which are making it necessary for new homes to meet higher energy performance standards than ever before. Housebuilders are under increasing pressure to include technologies like solar panels, heat pumps, and EV chargers in new developments.
At myenergi, we work closely with housebuilders to provide solutions that not only meet these regulations but also give them an advantage in the market. Our eco-smart products, like zappi and eddi, can help improve the SAP rating of new homes, which is a huge selling point. As homes become more energy efficient, buyers are increasingly looking for properties that will help them both save money and reduce their reliance on the grid. So, by featuring next-generation technologies, housebuilders can also improve the attractiveness of their properties – leading to premium pricing and faster sales.
This trend is only going to grow, meaning housebuilders who embrace renewable tech now will already be ahead of the curve.
Q: What’s been the proudest moment in your career so far?
There have been so many incredible moments, but one that stands out is when we won the Great British Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2022. It was a real validation of the hard work that the team had put into building myenergi from the ground up. But, more than awards, I’m proud of the fact that we’ve built a community of eco-conscious consumers who are passionate about making a difference. Seeing myenergi’s products in people’s homes, helping them cut costs and reduce their carbon footprint, is incredibly rewarding.
Another proud moment was opening our brand new headquarters in Stallingborough. Designed to set the standards in energy efficiency, it’s an unbelievable site that brings together our entire national operations in one place. From soldering products by hand in a small countryside workshop, to building one of the region’s most advanced production facilities highlights exactly how far we’ve come in six years.
Q: You’ve become a prominent advocate for women in tech and sustainability. What advice would you give to women looking to enter these fields?
For women looking to start their own business, it’s important to embrace the challenges and go in with the right mindset. Be persistent, expect setbacks, and never give up. Recognise that you can’t do everything yourself – bringing in the right people to support your weaknesses will help your business grow.
There are so many resources out there specifically for women – podcasts, books, and online communities. Get involved, build your network, and learn from others. Most importantly, focus on something you’re truly passionate about. If you love what you do, that energy will drive your success. Be proud of your journey and don’t be afraid to celebrate your wins.
Finally, keep learning. Technology and sustainability are constantly evolving, so stay curious and always look for new opportunities to grow and innovate.
Q: What’s next for myenergi? Any exciting developments on the horizon?
As a disruptive business operating at the global forefront of renewable energy tech, we’ve always got a lot in the pipeline. Recently, we launched a three-phase iteration of our market-leading eddi power diverter – eddi+. In addition, we’ve just announced myenergi One – our game-changing finance solution that makes it easier and cheaper than ever before to access the latest myenergi tech with zero upfront costs.
We’re also focusing on international growth. We’ve already established a strong presence in countries like Germany, Ireland, Belgium, The Netherlands and Australia, but there’s so much more potential out there. Our goal is to make myenergi a global leader in renewable technology and continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the space.
