Bewley COO inspires trade skills college students

Bewley Homes chief operating officer Peter Carpinelli accepted an invitation from Newbury College to meet and inspire students working towards a career in housebuilding.

The next generation of the construction industry’s much-needed workforce are currently studying for their City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Carpentry. The visit offered a chance for students to learn from a seasoned industry leader whose journey in housebuilding spans over four incredible decades.

The visit also included an unexpected reunion between Carpinelli and Bob Harding, his former carpentry teacher. Harding was the first to recognise Carpinelli’s potential back in 1979, nurturing the talent that would ultimately lead to a flourishing career. Their reunion served as a powerful testament to the impact of mentorship, illustrating how early guidance at a pivotal time can shape long-term professional success.

During the visit, Carpinelli and Harding explored the workshop and engaged with the students, sharing both industry insights and the lessons they learned along their own journeys, encouraging the students to “dare to think differently”, pursue their passions wholeheartedly, and put in the hard work necessary to achieve their ambitions.

Remembering the catalyst that first ignited his interest in a career in housebuilding Carpinelli recounted how a pivotal moment a competition at a local school (St Joseph’s in Swindon) to design a house ignited his passion for the housebuilding industry. He credited Harding’s unwavering support and encouragement for guiding him toward success at such a crucial time in his life.

He said: “I vividly remember being a ‘sufficiently spirited’ 14-year-old, full of ambition with a passion to compete in everything I did and win. That competition was more than just a moment; it was my springboard into a world of endless possibilities in housebuilding.

“I’ll forever be thankful for Bob’s belief in me. He saw something in me and helped pave my way. I hope that by sharing my story, I can empower these remarkable students to recognise that with passion, determination, and relentless hard work, the sky’s the limit in this vibrant industry.”

Sarah Mackfall, construction industry placement coordinator at Newbury College, added: “It’s moments like these, we’re reminded of the ripple effect mentorship can create, guiding future leaders one inspiring story at a time.

“We were delighted to welcome Peter and Bob to speak with our carpentry students. Their story, teacher and former student reunited to share a success story brought a unique and powerful message. It highlighted the importance of both skill development and mentorship within education and industry. The feedback has been very positive, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Bewley Homes in the future to give more of our students an opportunity for real-world experience.”
