Bellway has won the Major Project of the Year for its Future Homes project in the 2023 National Sustainability Awards.
The awards were established to recognise organisations which are leading the way towards a more sustainable and better future, and the ceremony to announce this year’s winners was held on Thursday 5 October at the Waldorf Hilton in London.
Bellway, which has its head office in Newcastle upon Tyne, won the award for its Future Homes project, which forms a key part of the company’s commitment to carbon reduction, one of the core priorities in the company’s Better with Bellway sustainability strategy.
At the heart of the Future Homes project is Bellway’s Future Home @ Energy House 2.0 – a prototype test house inside a climate-controlled chamber at The University of Salford.
The chamber has been designed so it can replicate the climate of 95% of the world’s habitable areas, almost every weather event – from searing sunshine to a blizzard – can be created on demand. This allows different sustainability measures to be tested in a range of conditions.
The lessons learned at the Future Home @ Energy House 2.0 are being put into practice in 13 Future Homes, which are being built at three Bellway developments, in Callerton near Newcastle, Bolton and Stafford. This part of the project will entail monitoring the homes to find out more about how sustainable technologies work for real families in real life.
