An apprentice working at construction services company Horbury Group has been commended by his employer and training provider and presented with an award.
Jordan Bew is 21 and completing an apprenticeship with Horbury Group at The Sheffield College. His enthusiasm, exemplary attitude and attendance have led to him being presented with an achievement award for being a role model to others.
Jordan said: “When I started at Horbury I was a blank slate with hardly any knowledge. Throughout the past two years of my apprenticeship, my knowledge of the estimating role and construction has increased massively due to the training I have received. The opportunity that Horbury’s apprenticeship scheme has given me has been a great start to my career.”
As an apprentice, Jordan spends four days a week in the office developing on-the-job skills at Horbury and one day at college studying in the classroom and completing a Construction and the Built Environment qualification.
He explained: “Doing an apprenticeship is hugely beneficial for anyone who is unsure about or doesn’t want to go to university straight from school as it provides on the job training to develop personal and job related skills, as well as the qualifications needed to start you on a career path.”
The apprentice awards take place three times a year at Horbury and recognise the best performing apprentice for each academic term.
Darren Sayles, estimating manager for Horbury Group, said: “Jordan continues to impress with his attitude and commitment. He works diligently from his own initiative and concentrates on the tasks in hand. He’s a well-liked member of the team and contributes positively during group discussions and meetings. Jordan is a credit to himself and his success is a reflection of Horbury’s commitment to the development of their apprentices with The Sheffield College. It’s a pleasure to work with Jordan.”
Tyrone Hoyland, head of academy – construction for The Sheffield College, said: “Jordan is a model apprentice who is keen to learn and go further in his career. He has a fantastic attitude, is highly committed to his studies and has exemplary attendance. Apprentices like Jordan help businesses get the talent and skills that they need to grow. We are pleased to see his progress and success with Horbury Group.”

Horbury provides construction solutions to developers, building owners and main contractors. The company, based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, employs around 1,200 workers nationwide.
The College works with approximately 2,150 employers. Of those, 850 employers support around 139 apprenticeship programmes involving approximately 2,800 apprentices.
