Multi-disciplinary design company rg+p recently offered first-year architecture students at Nottingham Trent University’s (NTU) School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment the chance to win a day of work experience as part of the university’s ‘Welcome Week’. It was a two-day challenge to the new students to come up with as many creative designs as they could. Only announced on the opening morning, the theme of the charette was changing the user experience of one of Nottingham’s most prominent public spaces, from a choice of Lace Market Square, Trinity Square or the university’s Arkwright Quad. Recently promoted and with a portfolio that includes a range of impressive developments around London, architect Emily Newton tells us about how her qualifications and skills have led to a career with a vital connection to the UK housebuilding industry. Please tell us about your role and the qualification/training/career path that took you there. My decision to study architecture was a big leap into the unknown. However, I’m now an associate director at Assael Architecture, a practice of nearly 90 employees based in Putney. My role focuses primarily on the early stage design, and achieving planning consent for the renewal of difficult and constrained sites, often involve heritage buildings. Architecture: London’s economic gem

A recent working paper from GLA Economics has revealed the enormous economic contribution London’s architecture sector makes to the UK economy. Overall, London’s architecture sector produced £1.7 billion in added value in 2015 making it larger than the Museums, Galleries & Libraries creative industry. In addition, the compound average rate of growth between 2009 and 2015 was 7.6 per cent per annum after adjusting for inflation, which was faster than the creative industries and the London economy as a whole. Architecture also attracts students to study in London and tourists to visit London. Approximately 19.3 per cent of undergraduates and 39.9 per cent of postgraduates studying architecture in the UK were at London-based higher education institutions.
