Open Doors 2018 campaign launches today

Today sees the launch of Open Doors, a construction industry campaign which gives visitors the chance to visit live sites around England, Scotland and Wales, launches today (Wednesday 28 February) to give the public the chance to see projects close up and inspire them towards a career path.

Taking place between Monday 19 and Saturday 24 March, the campaign, a partnership between Build UK and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), is this year operating at 270 construction sites around the country, up significantly from the 200 open last year.

With CITB’s recent Construction Skills Network report predicting the creation of 158,000 jobs across the network over the next five years, there will be many opportunities to make a successful career in housebuilding in a wide variety of roles, such as labouring, trade skills and managerial positions.

Today’s launch event sees students from local schools and colleges attending a preview of the new One Blackfriars development, right by the River Thames in central London. With construction still underway at the 32-storey building, the guests are treated to a behind the scenes tour and panoramic views across the capital, as well as seeing the range of roles that work together on construction projects.

Among other buildings in the Open Doors campaign are Edinburgh College of Art, the Zenith Building in Capital Quarter, Cardiff and Exeter University Student Hubs.

Suzannah Nichol MBE, chief executive of Build UK, says: “Open Doors 2018 is set to be another record-breaking year with fantastic, iconic sites like One Blackfriars opening up across England, Scotland and Wales. Open Doors provides an ideal opportunity for the industry to open their doors and highlight the vast array of jobs and careers available within it.”

Mark Noonan, CITB industry relations director, adds: “By providing an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at some of Britain’s best building sites, young people of all backgrounds can see the range of rewarding careers construction offers.

“We are predicting steady growth over the next five years, particularly in housing and infrastructure, so there really are huge opportunities out there for talented young people. One Blackfriars is already a spectacular part of London’s skyline, and Open Doors is an excellent way of showcasing the fantastic, modern construction projects that are changing our urban landscape.”
