New apprenticeship scheme sees three new roles at Midlands housing provider

Newark and Sherwood Homes, a builder and manager of affordable homes in north-east Nottinghamshire, recently expanded its team with three new young people as a result of its new apprenticeship scheme, called Recruiting and Employing Apprentices Championing Housing (REACH).

Aaron Sarafat, Ben Forde-Shaw and Chloe Rowberry have joined the Newark and Sherwood Homes team as apprentices in surveying, plumbing and business administration respectively.

Aaron says of his new role: “I have had some work experience at another company before coming here, but what made me want to come to Newark and Sherwood Homes was that it is a really good company where I can achieve a qualification at the same time. I am spending one day a week at college studying for an HNC in construction and spend the rest of the week working within the company. It is a really varied, real-life work experience, which I enjoy.”

The company worked with Vision West Nottinghamshire College to create the REACH programme, which was launched this spring, with the purpose of giving possible recruits a full picture of the types of careers available in the housing sector. This new programme builds on Newark and Sherwood Homes’ existing good reputation as an employer – in 2016, it came 27th in Inside Housing’s Innovation Index, ranked as a top employer.
