This two year part time course is aimed at those wishing to further their academic qualifications and enhance their career opportunities within the Construction industry (Insert)
The aim of this course is to train construction professionals and practitioners or equivalent for working in the construction industry and to provide a solid academic basis for further progression and study e.g. onto a professionally recognized undergraduate degree studied at The University of Wolverhampton.
This nationally recognized qualification is of use to people working in or looking to work in construction in a design, production or management role allowing you to specialize in a particular aspect of building.

What happens on the course?
In your first year, you will explore key skills and professional development, construction technology, services and materials, and finally construction legal procedures.
In your second year, subjects include Built Environment Enterprise Skills (including the economic background to construction projects, followed by the completion of a simulated project), Built Environment Professional Practice and Pre-Contract Studies.
The HNC Building Studies course prepares you for a career within the modern building team such as a contracts manager, estimator, site engineer or quantity surveyor. It’s an ideal first step for those looking for a professional role in the construction industry.
Specialist subject and academic knowledge enables students to develop their multi-disciplinary construction knowledge, to communicate effectively; to work in a team and develop good interpersonal skills; to solve problems; to work on their own initiative, and to adapt to changing situations.
Graduates from the HNC Building Studies will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the key multi-disciplinary principles of construction technology, law, economics and pre contract procedure
- Evaluate and apply the construction knowledge acquired to actively contribute to the construction process at technician level.
- Acquire construction knowledge and transferable skills in order to progress to higher BSc levels of study
The HNC Building Studies course when successfully completed may allow access to Associate Membership of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) subject to an appropriate application to that professional body, similarly Associate Members status of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors via their AssocRICS route.
Most successful graduates from this HNC Building Studies use the qualification to provide advanced entry onto our BSc degree courses with a variety of degree pathways to choose from including BSc Building Surveying, BSc Commercial Management & Quantity Surveying, BSc Construction Management and BSc Quantity Surveying.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate Mathematics and English Language proficiency to at least GCSE grade C level (or equivalent)
- Minimum grade E at A-Level ; or
- BTEC National Award grade P

An Access to HE Diploma full award
Students must have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, it is expected that some applicants will be mature students with work experience, who wish to further their career development. These applicants will be processed through standard procedures, which may involve an interview as part of the process.
