Onsite training for Royal Engineers with Redrow

Redrow is now working with the Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME) to provide onsite experience of a range of trade skills and recently invited Royal Engineers from Brompton Barracks, Chatham to its development in Ebbsfleet, Kent as it started a series of workshops for aspiring male and female engineers.

The housebuilder will host eight workshops on trades such as bricklaying, carpentry and drylining, giving 96 18- to 30-year-olds the chance to complement the RSME skills courses with practical learning on the development. On completion of their training, the Royal Engineers will be posted to carry out construction and maintenance on UK bases around the world.

Andy Pearson, project site manager at Redrow, said: “This is the first year we have joined up with the Royal School of Military Engineering and the workshops we have carried out so far have demonstrated the skill and knowledge the trainees have. It is so important to create opportunities for classroom learning to be put into practice on active construction sites and we are more than happy to assist in the important work the Royal Engineers carry out in the UK and overseas.”

Major Darren Hembery, the officer commanding 24 Training Squadron, commented: “This integrated approach has allowed trainee military engineers to contextualise how their artisan skillset is currently being used by the UK construction industry. In partnership with MidKent College Training Services, Redrow has provided a real opportunity for soldiers to deploy in support of future operations with a clearer understanding of the complexities associated to multi-discipline construction.”
