Scottish undergraduate completes placement at DJ Laing

A third-year student at the University of Abertay has now completed a work placement with local housebuilder DJ Laing Homes, part of an initiative by the Dundee Business School.

Gemma Wanless is a student on the Marketing and Business course and took part in a ten-week placement with the Carnoustie-based company working alongside DJ Laing’s marketing assistant, Daniel Rosie on a range of digital and branding projects.

Looking to graduate with honours and start a career in digital marketing, Gemma enjoyed combining the practical experience of social media and press release duties with the practical learning of business dynamics and internal communications offered by the regional housebuilder.

She says: “This experience has made me realise how much we use marketing in our daily lives, directly or indirectly. Marketing influences everyone. It has been interesting to see methods which I was aware of from my studies actually working in the business world. I have enjoyed using certain methods and techniques while realising ‘oh, I know about this, I wrote a report on it’.

“I have been made to feel very welcome at DJ Laing and would like to thank them for giving me the opportunity to work with the marketing team for the ten-week placement. I would recommend work experience to anyone. I have developed a practical knowledge and gained experience working in an office environment. Their industry requires individuals from all different sectors which makes the experience and company even more interesting.”

The Dundee Business School initiative provides work experience and an opportunity to showcase their skills for third-year students on a range of Business & Management, Business and Human Resource Management and Marketing & Business BA (Hons) courses.

Marketing assistant for the DJ Laing Group, Daniel Rosie, sees the benefits of giving students the chance to experience working in the industry, saying: “It was great to have Gemma join the team here at DJ Laing for her ten-week placement and allow her to get involved in the multiple projects we are currently working on. Myself and the team have been impressed by Gemma and her enthusiasm for the marketing industry. It’s great to hear that she has enjoyed her time here and has been inspired to pursue a career in digital marketing.

“I believe strong partnerships with local universities and colleges are essential for securing the next generation of employees and delivering the work force for the future, here at DJ Laing and outwith.”
