DCLG names new housing minister

Alok Sharma has been appointed the new Housing Minister after Gavin Barlow lost his seat in the election on 8 June.

Sharma was elected in 2010 as Member of Parliament for Reading West and in 2016 was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office by Theresa May.

“Honoured to be appointed Minister of State for Housing & Planning to work on building the homes Britain needs,” Sharma tweeted earlier today.

Sajid Javid was also reappointed Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, a move that has been welcomed by industry bodies.

“We are pleased to see Sajid Javid MP return as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government,” Ruth Davison, Executive Director of Public Impact at the National Housing Federation, said. “His understanding of the housing sector, combined with the continuity of his reappointment, will be of reassurance to the sector.

“We look forward to working with the Minister and his colleagues to deliver the houses the country so desperately needs and to find a sustainable way to build specialist homes for the elderly and more vulnerable.”

“Congratulations to my friend @AlokSharma_RDG, our new Housing & Planning Minister @CommunitiesUK. Great to have him on board,” Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, tweeted.
