The Electrolux Design Lab 2008 competition has awarded first prize to Stefan Buchberger for his 'Flatshare' invention. Flatshare is a modular fridge with individual compartments for people sharing accommodation. The design consists of a base station and up to four stackable modules. The modules allow users their own refrigerator space and can be customised with various colours and add-ons such as a bottle opener. Buchberger, from the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, explained: "In shared flats the refrigerator gets filthy because no one person feels responsible for cleaning it." The award challenged industrial design students to invent home appliances for the 'internet generation'. First prize was €5,000 and a six-month internship at one of Electrolux's global design centres. Other winning designs include the Scan Toaster, a USB toaster that prints news, weather and snapshots onto slices of toast; and Sook, a social networking recipe generator with electronic tongue.

The Used Kitchen Company sells both used and ex-display designer kitchens to developers and private individuals. The London-based firm argues that during the credit crunch, average savings on kitchens of between 50 and 75 per cent could be welcome news. The company has teamed up with more than 50 showrooms, including Poggenpohl, Schiffini, Alno and Underwood; available kitchens can be viewed on The Used Kitchen Company's website. The firm also lists, negotiates and sells used and ex-display kitchens on developers' behalf, and even arranges dismantling before a new kitchen arrives.
