Crossrail to create 14,000 jobs
Parliament has given the green light to the £16bn Crossrail project, creating 14,000 new jobs for the construction industry. The scheme, which will link Heathrow Airport with Canary Wharf, now has royal assent. This will allow the Crossrail team to start buying land and appoint delivery partners to ensure a 2009 start on the project, which has a completion date of 2017.
“Up to 14,000 people will be employed in the construction, and training schemes are planned to equip Londoners with the skills to secure these jobs,” said Doug Oakervee, the project’s chief executive. “This will be a project for the whole community – a new, world-class affordable railway that London expects and deserves.”
