Plumbing and heating supplier Wolseley has sacked its UK managing director in an effort to cut costs to deal with a difficult market.

Nigel Sibley and HR director Bob Mason have now left the firm, the company confirmed. The role of UK managing director will be taken over by the firm’s Europe chief executive Rob Marchbank, who will also keep his current role.

“Given the continuing deterioration in several of its markets, including the UK, the Wolseley group is taking action to reduce duplication and make cost savings across its operations,” the firm said in a statement.

The firm confirmed last week that widespread UK redundancies were not on the cards when figures revealing a 28% profit drop for Wolseley over the last 11 months hit the market. Over the last year, the firm has cut 10,000 of its 85,000 workforce, mostly in America, since the start of the credit crunch.
