Wiltshire manufacturer Mark Wilksinson Furniture brought acclaim to the county in an inspirational week that began with founder Mark Wilkinson lecturing to students at the Chelsea Design School. Mark and his wife Cynthia the played host to the Wessex Chamber of Commerce, which toured the two Bromham factories and the Showroom - and the highlight was a presentation, to the couple, of the region's Employer of the Year Award.

"But," says Mark Wilkinson, "there was more to come, when at the very end of the week the German publisher Axel Springer described my Children's furniture as 'Best in the World' ahead of names such as Dior, Ferrari and Dolce & Gabbana.

"Being judged Best in the World by such influential people in Germany, the country believed by most Europeans to epitomise quality, is quite a thrill", Wilkinson says, "a few years ago, we were described Best Makers of Kitchen Furniture by the World's key report for affluent people, the Robb Report, which is an American publisher and, as well as the personal honour for Cynthia and I, this is a great honour for all of the people in Bromham, who work for us. It shows England still has the ability to design and produce the very best in the World."

H+H aircrete products are making a major contribution to Barratt's highly successful Green House at the Building Research Establishment's Innovation Park near Watford, a showcase of innovative construction methods offering practical and affordable sustainability.

The Barratt Green House is the first home built by a volume housebuilder to achieve Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.
The shell of the three-storey Barratt Green House has been built using storey-height aircrete panels 600 milimetres wide and 200 milimetres thick, together with Jumbo Units, all 'glued' together with Celfix thin joint mortar for rapid construction.

Storey-height aircrete panels are widely used in Scandinavia but are not yet marketed in the UK. The excellent insulation they provide is a result of aircrete's aerated structure comprising thousands of tiny bubbles, with thin-layer mortar joints reducing thermal bridging. The solid aircrete walls, which assisted the Barratt Green House in achieving extremely low air permeability levels, resulted in an A rating under the BRE Green Guide and a U-value significantly better than 0.15W/m2K. They were externally lined with insulation before receiving a render finish. A positive decision was made to use aircrete with concrete floor slabs within the thermal envelope to provide high thermal mass which mitigates the peaks and troughs of temperature change within the home.
