Brick firm feels the housing pinch
Brickmaker Wienerberger has announced that it will close two of its plants, while others will be temporarily suspended, as a consequence of the housing downturn. The Austrian firm, which has a 19% market share in the UK, is to axe 80 jobs across two factories in Steer Point, Devon, and Ewhurst in Surrey, while many more jobs could be lost over the coming months.
Harald Schwarzmayr, managing director of Wienerberger UK, said: “We adjust our production capacity in line with the housing market.”
The fall in the volume of housing starts this year saw the deliveries of bricks to UK sites fall by 13% in Q1 2008, according to the Construction Products Association.
