Eco-towns “big mistake” says Labour peer

Lord Rogers Lord Rogers has mounted an attack against government plans to build ten eco-towns, claiming they go “against everything we know about sustainability”.
Speaking at a New London Architecture conference, Rogers (pictured), who is lobbying against the eco-town plans, called the proposals “one of the biggest mistakes government could make”.

“Building in green areas for 5,000 to 10,000 people has to be car-based – it will not be a walking, living community,” said Rogers. “Whether or not they’ll change their direction, I don’t know, but I certainly hope so.”

Rogers, who is behind the designs of Heathrow’s Terminal 5 and the Welsh National Assembly building, also voiced criticisms of poor housing design in the Thames Gateway regeneration project. “It is due to the irresponsibility of major housebuilders, and the irresponsibility of the government for not making decisions.”
