Major regeneration planned for East of England

Parmjit Dhanda The East of England is to undergo massive regeneration over the next two decades, which will include the delivery of hundreds of thousands of new homes and jobs while also improving the infrastructure of the region.
The revised Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) offers a plan for ‘continuing growth and spreading prosperity to all communities in the East of England’. The RSS plans to construct 508,000 new homes and create 452,000 fresh jobs by 2021. This is in response to figures that new households in the area are expected to grow by 30,500 a year up to 2021.

Around £150m of investment in new developments is expected to be ploughed into the region between 2008 and 2011, improving the main towns and cities of the east of England, including a minimum of 35% affordable housing, along with funding for new schools, hospitals, leisure centres and transport links.

Parmjit Dhanda (pictured), Communities minister, commented: “This plan is a big step forward in addressing the demands in the East of England. It will deliver the affordable housing, better transport networks, stronger environmental protections and new jobs that the region needs.”
