Housing associations to up their game

Sustainable Homes Index For Tomorrow (SHIFT) benchmarking system Training consultancy Sustainable Homes is giving housing associations the opportunity to raise their profiles across both the private and public sectors in launching the Sustainable Homes Index For Tomorrow (SHIFT) benchmarking system.
Each group will have the chance to assess sustainability improvements in performance each year, which will be ranked in bands ranging from bronze to platinum.

The Peabody Trust, Gentoo Green, Hastoe Housing Association and Wakefield and District Housing have already signed up to the programme, which is sponsored by the Housing Corporation, the UK Green Building Council, WWF-UK and Bank of Scotland Corporate.

“Housing association tenants are very vulnerable, and really need to be protected in the future from the risks of climate change, so this will encourage associations to retrofit their old housing stock,” Grazia Dal Fara, an index manager at Sustainable Homes, told Show House online. “It’s also a great chance for them to raise their profiles – they already have awards for new projects, but there’s no way of telling how associations are performing on a sustainability scale.”
