Baxi’s Duo-tec Combi 28 boiler has been voted the best buy by Which? magazine.
The model, which achieved five-star ratings for efficiency, low nitrogen oxide emissions, features and ease of installation, was found to be an excellent choice for flats and smaller houses by independent advisers at the leading consumer publication.

After testing 34 boilers from a selection of leading manufacturers for fuel consumption, durability, energy efficiency and emissions, the magazine’s reviewers concluded: “This is one of the few boilers we’ve tested which reaches the very highest efficiency standards, matching its claims to meet the A SEDBUK standard. As well as offering excellent efficiency, this boiler is reassuringly easy to use.”

“Baxi has invested greatly in research and development to minimise emissions and increase the efficiency of its boilers,” added Raxa Chauhan, Baxi’s head of product management. “At a time when climate change, global warming and high fuel costs are constantly making headline news, we’re delighted that our model has been thus recognised for its performance, efficiency and environmental credentials.” The full report can be viewed on the Which? website www.which.co.uk.

Over at Chimney Pot Park in Salford, Manchester, Urban Splash is installing Ferroli’s combi boilers. R.A.D. Mechanical Services, the scheme’s mechanical contractor, recommended 25 kiloWatt combi boilers from Ferroli’s SEDBUK A-rated Optimax range as the best value domestic boiler on the market for the 349 refurbished Victorian on site. The remodelled homes have placed open-plan living areas on the first floor, and relocated the bedrooms and bathrooms to the lower level to maximise the eco-friendly potential of the properties, 100 of which now boast Ferroli’s Optimax combi condensing boilers.

“We had already decided a combi would meet the demands of these two-bedrooms houses,” says Mark Radcliffe, R.A.D.’s mechanical services director, “so it was just a matter of choosing the right model. When we compared the various options from the main manufacturers, Ferroli’s Optimax 25C came out on top in price, performance, support and accessories. It’s also a really compact boiler, and was easy to site in the space available.”

ROK Developments will be using Framing Solutions’ Surebuild steel frame system to build a £2.8 million apartment development in Portland, Dorset.
Framing Solutions will supply the external, internal and party walls, floor cassettes for each compartment and truss roof frames to be used in the construction of the three buildings which will house the 33 one and two-bedrooms flats at Grangecroft Road.
Built on behalf of Weymouth and Portland Housing, the scheme, constructed on the site of a former school playground, aims to create high-quality affordable housing for the area, says Andy Durant, ROK’s contract manager: “We chose the Framing Solutions system for this project because it offered a fast and modern method of construction particularly suited to the design of the homes we’re building. The Surebuild system not only facilitates an effective construction programme, but exceeds legislative requirements.”
Work started on site at the end of July, and is due to finish next March.
In Manchester, Inspired Developments has selected Kingspan Off-Site’s TEK timber frame building system to build a series of eco-friendly properties in Heywood Gardens. Chosen for its high levels of thermal insulation, the firm’s Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) system supplied energy efficient perimeter walls, floors, decking and roof panels for the ten four-bedroom homes, all of which conform to an ‘Excellent’ EcoHomes standard.

Penrhyn Homes is using Craven Dunnill’s tiles to kit out its Glyn Garth Court apartment development in Colwyn Bay, North Wales.
Nicky Roberts, Penrhyn’s interiors and project manager, chose wall and floor tiles
from Craven Dunnill’s Marazzi Tau, Cerdomus and Azuvi ranges for the scheme’s en suite bathrooms, kitchens and diners, balconies and patios to give the build a modern and unusual look. “I knew I wanted something different and not seen in other developments in the area,” says Roberts, “and they had to be top quality. I was impressed by the depth of choice Craven Dunnill presented.”
Over in South Wales, Charles Church has chosen Shades’ high-gloss Bianca bathroom range for its Pen y fai development, Cavendish Green.
As luxury options for the four-bedroom executive pads Charles Church is marketing, the Bianca range was chosen for its elegant and adaptable look, the firm says. The furniture has also been topped with a series of black quartz countertops throughout the £400,000 new homes.
